Market Summary
Slaughter cows and bulls fully steady, trying to move higher. This week saw the calf market move higher, especially the heavier steers. We finally saw some $3900 steers again. It sure seemed like the futures found their feet this week and rallied sharply on the week. Maybe the tsunami of bad news ranging from the President’s war on beef prices all the way to packing plant closures have finally come to an end and we’re going to start focussing on actual supply and demand again. I sure hope so. Bred cow and heifer prices seem high but according to the weekly CanFax report are still low compared to steer calf prices. With the strength in calf prices looking like it’s got several years left the bred price is actually not that high. If you’re a cow calf producer it’s a very bad time to run out of cows. It was a good week. Have a good weekend. Ian
